Keystone Flight -- Fighter Factory (42VA) and First Flight(FFA) -- March 20, 2010
Fighter Factory:
We had a NINE SHIP formation land on turf, and then get "rock star parking" on the ramp right next to the Spitfire and Hurricane in the hanger!
Wonderful museum; I highly recommend it to anyone going on vacation or on business to the Virginia Beach area. It is not a "normal" airport to fly into, so getting permission is not exactly easy - they really don't like a lot of traffic in and out of there.
Anyway, still a great place to drive to for our members interested in Warbird Aviation.
Just thought I'd share these with you. It was a lot of fun leading a huge formation into this field - probably the best fly-in I've ever planned/been part of to date!
First Flight:
Here are some photos of the KEYSTONE FLIGHT on our recent visit to Kitty Hawk, NC!
This was a fun mission to plan - down the seaboard starting before sunrise then over the Chesapeake Bay (climb to glide distance altitudes since we were over-water) and over Norfolk and Oceana's airspace down the beach all the way to North Carolina....
Nice breeze blowing down there - packed with airplanes with the same idea, but here we come with EIGHT more planes! We had to park on the grass.
Denny, I cannot describe the feeling of landing at First Flight in your own plane - it is amazing and exciting! We really enjoyed ourselves there - nothing like flying into a place like that - what a pilgrimage!
A few nice things to see - lots on the Wright Brothers....magnificent monument on the hill.
Highly recommend this as a destination for any pilot! It is a touchstone!
Photos from recent flight. I was able to make contact with the owner of this facility to get permission for the flight to land right at the museum - great time!
Warm Regards, Mike Marra, KEYSTONE FLIGHT, EAA CH 122

I included a photo of the P40 with an inset of
an autographed panel by a WW-II pilot Tex Hill. While I was talking with
one of the Docents he related to me the background story of this autograph.
The P-40 was flying in an air show near Orlando, FL, they located Tex Hill
in an assisted living facility. They acknowledged his service by having him
autograph this P40. What an inspiring story.
Just hearing the sound of the P51 Merlin engine really was exciting and
gave me goose bumps with that experience.
